Golfing Success

Oxfordshire Schools Individual Golf Tournament, 2nd May 2012 

Congratulations to Pan Leenutaphong who has qualified to represent Oxfordshire schools in the South England golf championships to be played over 36 holes at Hadden Hill Golf Course on 7th June. 

Pan came third in the County tournament,  just one shot behind the co-winners. Pan scored 72, a handicap equalling 5 over par at the event held at North Oxford Golf Course. After a solid front nine (+1), Pan was disappointed with his play at the turn, dropping 3 shots over holes 10 and 11. However, he regrouped excellently to push the leaders all the way, leaving him just one shot behind.

We wish Pan the best of luck in his attempt to qualify for the National Championships!

Inter-College Football Match

Lower Sixth 4 - 1 Upper Sixth

The 13th of March saw a select lower sixth team playing a select team of upper sixth and international study center students. The lower sixth would emerge victorious by a score of 4-1 at full time.

Both teams in the first half played with determination and skill as the worked towards victory. The lower sixth would score in the first half after a play of good passing. However the upper sixth and ISC players would be quick to try and claim their own as they worked tirelessly to try and get an all-important goal before half time. At half time though the score would be 1-0 in favour of the lower sixth.

Quickly after the restart of the game for the second half the upper sixth and ISC team would score to level the game at 1-1 and deal a blow to the morale of the lower sixth team. As the match progressed deeper into the second half the lower sixth pressed their opposition higher up the field and after some well-timed runs and pinpoint passing the final score would end up 4-1 in favor of the lower sixth.

Both teams played well, were dedicated for the entirety of the game and as such should be congratulated. Well done.

Namibia 2012

Later this year, 20 of our Sixth Form and Year 11 students will be going to Namibia to work on improving the facilities of a local school by refurbishing classrooms and building playground areas. Our students will also help with activities and teaching whilst working with local pupils.

"Education is a high priority for Namibians, especially in the more remote regions where schools are more isolated. By working alongside communities to upgrade recreation and education facilities so to assist the daily education of Namibian pupils our education projects are intended to provide a meaningful and sustainable exchange for groups who wish to get closer to a rural community." according to 'Schools Worldwide'. The College organised a similar trip two years ago to Zambia which is featured in the photos.

To raise money for the materials to be used in Namibia, students have organised several events over the next few weeks, including two cake sales, a 'Safari Day' and Quiz Night. More information on these will be posted in due course.

Alongside these, a number of other social events have been planned for the term ahead, including:

• a trip to the Oxford University v The Army rugby match at the University sports ground on 7th February
• an ice skating disco at the Oxford Ice Rink on 24 February
• d'Overbroeck's Got Talent in March

In this pulsating Final, Woodgreen clinched victory scoring a try with the very last touch of the game.

After conceding a fairly early try, d'Overbroeck's regained the upper hand and two fantastic finishes by Tom Payne and Dominic Crisp put them 5 points up at the break. Early in the second half Matt Kitchen was rather unfairly sin-binned for 10 minutes which allowed Woodgreen back back into the match, scoring two tries to regain the lead. d'Overbroeck's did well to weather the storm, and the tide soon turned when Matt returned, after which a Woodgreen player was also sin-binned for a high tackle. With their influential number 10 back and with great running by centres Harry Gaunt and Tarquin Tate, d'Overbroeck's'  impressive Sam Barton and Tom Payne scored two further tries.

Woodgreen were reeling and d'Overbroeck's should have secured the game with some great chances, but poor off loading in the final few yards cost the team dearly. In the dying stages, and with only one sub available, a tiring d'Overbroeck's racked up penalty after penalty, their defence being punished by a very strict referee. In the end Woodgreen managed to convert two late tries to break d'Overbroeck's' hearts and take the Vase.

d'Overbroeck's' performance was unrecognisable from their first couple of matches this season, showing how far they've come. The team played extremely well, and the spirit and attitude of all players was first class; a real achievement despite a very disappointing result.

Man of the Match: With any number of players up for the award,  joint honours go to Tom Payne, for so frequently turning defence into attack as well as scoring two tries, and Harvey Taylor of Leckford Place who as a late replacement was tremendous in defence throughout.

On a wet, chilly Tuesday afternoon the d'Overbroeck's team were all set for their first league game. It took them a while to get into the match and after ten minutes, a rush of blood to the head saw the goalkeeper rush off his line and take down the opposition's striker, gifting them a penalty. At 0-1 down the game looked fairly balanced, but midway through the first half, King Alfred Sports College managed to break twice, scoring two goals in quick succession: 0-3. Five minutes before half time Dash Ward made a strong run and finding Matt Gandy in space, crossed the ball for him to finish with a lovely curling shot: 1-3 at half time.

Despite being 1-3 down the game didn't feel out of reach; furthermore, King Alfred's were not looking comfortable. d'Overbroeck's played some great football, until the referee signalled there was only ten minutes left, at which point, in an attempt to get back on level terms, panic set in, leaving space for King Alfred's to manipulate play and score a fourth goal. The last goal of the match, and the fifth for King Alfred's was a penalty, given after a handball. On the whole, d'Overbroeck's performed well, playing some good football and working well as a team. But conceding two penalties was just too much to come back from.

d'Overbroeck's were outclassed by an excellent St Clare's team, who this year had very strong European contingent in their team. Four d'Overbroeck's players played their first ever match, three of them adding to the scoreboard. Plenty of lessons to be learned from this defeat by an inexperienced d'Overbroeck's team, who, in terms of work rate, kept going right until the end.
